Why do so many people with joint pain avoid strength training when it may actually help them?
Many people with joint pain are afraid of putting any kind of load on their joints. It’s an understandable fear, but it’s also a common misconception. In reality, resistance training supports your joints by strengthening the muscles around them. That’s exactly what physiotherapy, mobility exercises, and muscle-strengthening programs are designed to do.
The key is understanding how your joints are being loaded.
Think about the difference between resistance training and high-impact activities. Resistance training places your joints under a controlled, steady load, while activities like running and jumping expose them to repeated impacts. Those impacts create much greater stress on your joints.
Imagine placing a heavy object on a wooden board versus striking the same board repeatedly with a hammer of equal weight. Which one is more likely to damage the wood? The same principle applies to your joints.
II. What Makes Strength Training a Low-Impact Exercise?
Why is strength training considered a low-impact activity?
Strength training is considered a low-impact form of exercise because it doesn't involve sudden forces traveling through your bones and joints the way running or jumping does.
When you perform a resistance exercise, your body knows what's coming. Your nervous system activates your muscles before the movement begins, allowing them to brace your joints and keep them stable. As your muscles work together to move the resistance, there is no sudden impact striking your bones or joints.
Strength training is simply the process of making your muscles work against resistance. That resistance can come from many different sources. Barbells, dumbbells, weight machines, resistance bands, and even your own body weight all challenge your muscles in different ways, but they all achieve the same goal, making your muscles stronger.
For someone dealing with joint pain, I strongly recommend resistance bands over any other type of resistance. Throughout my three years of training with resistance bands, I've noticed a significant difference compared to traditional weights. Resistance bands feel much gentler on the joints and ligaments while still providing enough resistance to stimulate muscle growth and strength.
I wouldn't recommend jogging or any exercise that involves repeated jumping for someone who is overweight, obese, or already experiencing joint pain. Traditional weights can be both safe and effective when used properly, but resistance bands are even gentler on the joints.
Many professional athletes eventually experience the long-term effects of years of high-impact training. I personally gave up jogging after developing inflammation in my knee ligaments and realizing I was heading toward arthritis. Today, I can squat 120 kg without pain or inflammation.
For me, the results speak for themselves.
III. Is Strength Training Safe for People Who Are Overweight?
Why is strength training often one of the safest exercise options for overweight individuals?
People who are overweight are already placing extra stress on their joints every day. The human body wasn't designed to carry excessive weight all the time, which is one of the reasons obesity is associated with so many health problems.
Our bodies are built to move, not to remain obese or sedentary. I once read that humans evolved to endure long periods of movement, even more than many animals. Our ancestors hunted by pursuing animals over long distances until the animals became exhausted. Whether or not every detail of that theory is correct, one thing is clear: our bodies were designed for movement.
When you're carrying excess body weight, your joints are already under constant load. Now imagine adding the repeated impact of jogging or jumping. That's why I don't recommend those activities for overweight individuals. Whenever possible, avoid unnecessary impact on your joints.
Resistance training, on the other hand, offers a much safer and more controlled approach. Unlike body weight, the resistance you train with can be adjusted to match your ability. It can be light enough to stimulate your muscles without placing excessive stress on your joints, and the entire training program can be tailored to your individual needs.
For example, if an overweight person can't perform bodyweight squats comfortably, they may be able to use a leg press or perform leg extensions with a light weight, just enough to strengthen their quadriceps. If push-ups are too difficult, they can substitute machine presses, dumbbell presses, or cable flyes with an appropriate amount of resistance.
The goal isn't to lift the heaviest weight possible. The goal is simply to challenge the muscles enough to become stronger while keeping the joints safe.
IV. How Does Strength Training Protect and Support Your Joints?
How does getting stronger actually improve joint health?
When we live a sedentary lifestyle, our muscles begin to shrink through a process called atrophy. They become weaker, and so do our bones. The body is designed to conserve energy whenever possible. If you don't use a muscle, your body sees no reason to maintain it, so it gradually reduces its size to save energy.
The same principle applies to your bones. If they aren't regularly exposed to enough load, your body has little reason to keep them as strong and dense as they could be.
Resistance training changes that.
When you place your muscles and bones under an appropriate amount of resistance, your body recognizes that they are needed for daily function and survival. In response, it begins strengthening them.
Stronger bones become more resilient to loading. Stronger muscles absorb and share some of the stress that would otherwise be placed directly on your joints. Stronger ligaments help stabilize your joints and keep them properly aligned.
Strength also improves posture. Strong back muscles help you stand upright. Strong legs improve mobility. Strong arms and chest make everyday activities easier.
Everything works together to support healthier, more stable joints.
V. Can Strength Training Help Prevent Arthritis and Osteoporosis?
How does lifting weights improve long-term bone and joint health?
With consistent exercise, your muscles become stronger and your bones become denser. This helps reduce the risk of conditions such as osteoporosis and may also help protect your joints as you age.
Normally, people lose bone density and muscle strength over time. But let's stop at the word normally. I believe that "normal" reflects how most people live today, a largely sedentary lifestyle. Just because something is common doesn't mean it's inevitable.
Regular resistance training changes that equation. By continuing to challenge your muscles and bones, you encourage your body to maintain much of the strength that would otherwise be lost with age.
Of course, not every condition can be prevented. If someone develops arthritis despite their best efforts, resistance training can still play an important role. By strengthening the muscles around the affected joints and exercising within a safe, pain-free range of motion, many people with arthritis can improve their mobility and overall quality of life.
That said, anyone with arthritis should always consult their doctor and physiotherapist before beginning or modifying an exercise program to ensure it is appropriate for their specific condition.
VI. How Can Strength Training Reduce Joint Pain and Stiffness?
Why does moving a painful joint often make it feel better over time?
I live by one simple motto:
"Respect the injury, and it will respect you back."
Treat an injury with care, and never try to push through pain. Give your body both the time and the reason to heal itself.
Exercise isn't supposed to be a form of torture. It doesn't have to hurt. If an exercise causes pain, you're either performing it incorrectly or doing more than your body is ready for.
If you have a painful joint, perform the exercise only within a pain-free range of motion. As your joint gradually improves, you can slowly increase that range. Forcing it beyond its current limits will only do more harm than good.
Earlier, I mentioned giving your body time to heal. This is where patience becomes important. Healing and progress both take time, so trying to rush the process is actually counterproductive.
Consistent exercise works alongside your body's natural healing process. Little by little, it helps restore strength, mobility, and function. Consistency is your greatest ally, so be patient and trust the process.
If you ever push too far, choose the wrong exercise, or experience pain or swelling afterward, stop immediately. Rest the joint and apply heat until the pain or swelling subsides over the next couple of days. If it doesn't improve, consult your doctor.
VII. What Are the Best Practices for Safe, Joint-Friendly Strength Training?
How can you train safely if you have joint pain or stiffness?
Throughout my own experience, I discovered something surprising. None of my injuries actually came from strength training itself. Most of them came from jogging or simply sitting for long periods of time.
In fact, most strength-training injuries don't happen because the exercise is dangerous, they happen because people make mistakes.
Fortunately, those mistakes are usually easy to avoid.
Here are a few simple rules that can help keep you safe:
Warm up before every workout.
Learn and use proper exercise technique.
Lift weights you can control. Don't let your ego choose the weight.
Don't push yourself to exhaustion or overtrain.
A proper warm-up does more than simply increase your heart rate. It increases blood flow to your muscles, preparing them for exercise, while also activating your central nervous system for the work ahead.
Using proper exercise technique ensures that the target muscles do the work they're supposed to do. When you lift more weight than you can control, your body starts compensating by swinging or jerking the weight, increasing your risk of injury.
Another lesson that surprised me when I first learned about resistance training was how much importance it places on recovery. Rest is just as important as the workout itself. That's when your muscles repair themselves, grow stronger, and prepare for the next training session.
The good news is that resistance training is also very time-efficient. With just two or three workouts per week, each lasting around 40 minutes, you can lose weight, build muscle, and dramatically improve your overall fitness.
Finally, if you have an injury, medical condition, or chronic disease, always consult your physician before starting any exercise program. Even something as beneficial as exercise can become harmful if it's done incorrectly or isn't appropriate for your condition.
Your doctor can advise you on which exercises to perform, which movements to avoid, and how to exercise safely. The goal is always to improve your health, not make things worse.
As I mentioned earlier, strength-training injuries usually come from our mistakes, not from the exercise itself.
VIII. Conclusion
Can strength training become one of the best long-term solutions for healthier joints?
When you strength train, your body shifts into an anabolic state, focusing on repairing, strengthening, and building itself. When you don't use your muscles, the opposite happens. Your body begins conserving energy by allowing muscles to shrink and bones to weaken.
As the saying goes: If you don't use it, you lose it.
For anyone who is overweight, I strongly recommend resistance training because of the level of safety, control, and customization it offers. The resistance can be adjusted to suit virtually any fitness level, allowing you to strengthen your muscles without placing unnecessary stress on your joints.
When you lift weights, your central nervous system coordinates the movement by activating thousands of muscle fibers in a carefully synchronized pattern. It's an incredibly complex and fascinating process. Over time, resistance training increases your metabolism, strengthens your muscles, improves bone density, reinforces your ligaments, and provides better support for your joints.
It's never too late to start.
Begin with small, manageable steps. Be patient. Stay consistent.
